Baseball Announces Another Signee

June 2, 2008

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Samford baseball program has announced the signing of Trey Hayes for its 2008 signing class, head coach Casey Dunn announced Monday.

"Trey has played over 80 games at the college level in an outstanding conference," Dunn said. "He hit for average and power while also stealing a lot of bases. He is a very good student that is a great fit for Samford University and we are excited to have him join us."

Trey Hayes (OF, 6-1, 200, Crestview, Fla., Okaloosa-Walton CC) is a power-hitting outfielder with speed that will join the Bulldog program this fall from Okaloosa-Walton Community College in Florida. While competing in one of the top conferences in the country, Hayes led the team in home runs and was second in batting average, doubles and runs batted in, and he was third in stolen bases. Hayes played primarily in the outfield as a sophomore, but also played at first base this season after playing some third base as a freshman.

As a sophomore, he led his team with 10 home runs while also batting .363, with 13 doubles, 49 runs batted in and 12 stolen bases. Hayes was also one of only two players to play in every game this season.

Hayes played high school baseball as a shortstop at Crestview High in Florida where he was a three-year starter and All-Area performer. He was named All-State for two seasons and a PUMA All American.

Hayes' power numbers and experience should prove valuable for the Bulldogs next season, having lost a strong group of seniors with power.

The coaches are expecting to release the final additions to the 2008 signing class in the next couple of weeks.
