Women's Golf Sits At Third After Round One Of OVC Championship

April 14, 2008

MUSCLE SHOALS, Ala. --- The Samford women's golf team sits in third place after one round of play in the 2008 Ohio Valley Conference Women's Golf Championship. The Bulldogs trail Murray State by eight shots and have three women in the top 20.

Teams fought chilly and windy conditions in the first round of the tournament which is being held on the Fighting Joe Course at The Shoals on the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail.

Murray State leads the pack, shooting 320 in round one, while Jacksonville State, who is looking to win an unprecedented fourth straight OVC women's golf championship, trails just two shots out of the lead, shooting 322. The Bulldogs stayed in the top three throughout the whole first round, but eventually landed at third at the end of the day, shooting 328.

Tennessee Tech follows Samford at fourth place, while Austin Peay, Eastern Kentucky, Eastern Illinois and Tennessee State round out the bottom four.

Katelyn Stanier, last year's individual medalist, currently sits in a tie for fifth place at seven over par. She was one of just seven players to shoot under 80 in the first round of play. Fellow sophomores Heather Arnold and Sara Hunt join Stanier in the top 20, as Arnold (81, +9) is tied for tenth place while Hunt (83, +11) is tied for 15th. Courtney Warr was the first Samford player to finish Monday's round, shooting 85 to tie for 23rd place while Maria Troche shot 92 to tie for 33rd place.

Austin Peay's Chelsea Harris shot a round of 77 (+5) and is the leader by a stroke after day one. She opened her round with a birdie and finished two over par for the front nine. A birdie, two bogeys (including on her final hole of the day) and a double bogey left her at three-over for the back nine and five-over for the day.

Round two begins Tuesday with a 9:30 a.m. start. Live scoring from the event can be found on www.golfstat.com and a full recap and results will be available on www.samfordsports.com at the conclusion of each round.
